The R-Line Story
The recent unveiling of the R-Line trinity, comprising of the Arteon R-Line, Tiguan Allspace R-Line and Passat R-Line, together with the Tiguan Allspace Highline, marked a milestone for Volkswagen in Malaysia. Not only was launching four new models in one go considered ambitious, this was memorable as it also boosted Volkswagen's R-Line line-up here.
The allure of R
The concept of Volkswagen R-Line began at Volkswagen R, the brand's performance department. Widely coveted around the world, R models represent the crème of the crop for Volkswagen and stands for Premium Performance within the brand. Over the years, Volkswagen understood that there was a demand out there for the cars that featured similar aesthetic without the offered performance, and this is where the R-Line models come in.
The R-Line range was created to offer drivers a way to express one's individuality and make a sporty statement, while still providing great value. The very first R-Line model was showcased way back in 2007, with the R36 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It was in 2011 that Volkswagen began offering the R-Line trim on numerous models, the first was on the Volkswagen CC.
Since then, the R-Line badge could be found on other models, ranging from the Sharan to the Touareg.
R-Line touches
The key element that defines an R-Line model is the R-Line badge, present on the exterior of the car on its front grille and side panels and. Inside the vehicle, the R-Line styling extends to R-Line seats and steering wheel. Other touches include chrome trims and aluminium sports pedals.
Parked next to their more regular-trimmed counterparts, the R-Line models instantly stand out due to their more aggressive and sporty facade.
The R-Line in Malaysia
The love affair Malaysians have with the R-Line came a little bit later. It was in 2011 that Volkswagen first offered a model with the R-Line trim on the Passat CC. Available in very limited units, needless to say every single one was quickly snapped up by enthusiasts.
The second R-Line model came in the form of the Mk7.5 Golf R-Line, which redefined the way the entry-level Golf should look. And this year, Volkswagen in Malaysia kicked off a triple-offensive with three new R-Line variants on the Arteon, Tiguan Allspace and Passat.
One thing is for sure, this will not be the last one will see of the R-Line in Malaysia!
